Thats a great question.....I would surmise because of the weight. Ore Jennies are considerably smaller, when they load those to the top. Hopefully someone has the actual reason. |

Taconite trains when loaded into regular hoppers are only half loaded to maintain the center of gravity. Taconite is a very heavy product, just look at the power these trains have! If you have a full car you are going to be very prone to tipping, especially on longer congers. Sometimes if you are lucky you'll see some DPU action. When taconite trains are loaded into taconite cars which are much shorter, I imagine they are loaded to near capicity. Those little cars sure loose a lot of their load sometimes. Go up on the main lines on the Iron Range and you'll see pellets everywhere! Even the Prescott bridge has quite a pile of taconite pellets under it. |
