Interesting, they do the same thing to jets on airplanes. It's done to prolong the engines life or TBO(Time before Overhaul). |

I think railroads do this to lower fuel consumption primarily. TBO is also a concern as new locomotives have OnStar-like diagnostic connections to prevent minor failures which lead to major failures and time off revenue earning runs. |
