This may be the wrong place to ask this... But do any of you guys ever railfan around Elk River? I've moved to Otsego and it would be nice to have someone to railfan with on occasion, especially since I don't know the area...

I will leave the info to a resident of Elk River, but I do get up there once in a while. http://twincitiesrailfan.com/picture.php?&city=16

Aaron's probably the only photographer that I know of that has taken that many photos in town. I see quite a few of your photos where taken in the parking lot next to the tracks. I've never sat there, but it would be a good spot. The Northstar parking lot, which is at 171st Street, is another good spot, best in the morning, but again I've never sat there before. I've taken a few photos by the power plant. It looks like you've taken a photo in the Bank of Elk River's parking lot (again, I've never sat there). Back when I used to live within biking distance, which was up until May of 2005, I used to sit at the end of the siding, which you can see in the photo, but most of the time it was farther back, about where the block of green boxcars or centerbeam flats are (there's 3 white signs to the right of the lead engine, if you look to the upper right there's the block of green & white cars; it was to the right of those, on the right side of the siding) http://twincitiesrailfan.com/photo.php?photo_id=152 . Other spots that I can think of include:
*The parking lot on the north side of the tracks, along Railroad Drive (look for a P.S Dance Studio), best in the morning hours.
*The Elk River Machine Parking lot. Best in the morning hours too. In the photo above, if you where to look to the right, across the tracks is a tan colored building. That's ERMC. Weekends would be the best, since there's only a person or two there. I wouldn't worry about getting chased off, I have a few family members who work there, so if you say that your watching trains, they should understand. If you see an older gentlemen, driving a blue sedan, that's my uncle, and if you see an older women driving a red Nissan Titan, that's my aunt. My dad works there too, so don't worry if you see him. He drives a Chevy Tahoe (silver brich is the name of the color I think).

If you took the time to read through that, thanks.
If anyone has any other questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the info guys.

I have been railfanning a bit on the West(or North) side of town where there is a grade crossing (Zebulon st?)with a gravel area where I can park off the road. I want to say it's at the end of 192nd street but i'm not sure.

That is likely where i'll be railfanning tomorrow morning if the weather is nice.

http://twincitiesrailfan.com/picture.php?&location=88 are specifically the shots from 171st. Great views in both directions depending on where the sun is.

Most likely you will be heading east on Hiway 10, if memory serves right, take the left immediately after the 50's cafe. This will be access to the Park-and-Ride. I park closest to the crossing and walk 30 ft to the crossing.
