First of all, the derailment occurred on 6/5/2006, not the 5/5 as reported by the media. (Another fact wrong, imagine that!)
Secondly, the Sheriff's dept captain was incorrect on the amount billed per hour, and quite frankly his comments were inappropriate. Since PGR is a private company any discussions of our costs should come from us.
The Capt should have kept his comments to HIS dept's actions and not made comment on a topic for which he is not authorized.
The amount of money actually charged is private, but it is not the amount quoted. The money is very well spent, Hulcher is experienced, has the right equipment, and the insurance to handle this severe an incident. Even at $10,000 an hour it would be a bargain, lots of machines, and even more people. We thought about doing the work ourselves, but the chance of one of us getting hurt was not worth it. Money well spent as far as I'm concerned.
The 3 cars seen in the photos will not be rerailed by Hulcher. 2 of the cars will be trucked out while the third is rebuilt and rerailed by another contractor. The other 2 cars in the incident were removed within hours of the event.
As far as a cause is concerned. No official determination has been made by PGR. We have two suspected causes that was communicated to the media, a sun kink or broken rail. It is likely we will never be able to determine exactly which one. Any other causes are ruled out, and those saying differently are misinformed.
