DUPONT paint code 143K was the Missabes "paint code" for their engines.
And if you also check the MRHS website, you will see this same paint and yes it does have a "chameleon effect" as far as sun angle is concerned. Just by going thru the diesel roster you will be able to see this paint in different lights. And it looks like it's purple, brown, iron oxide brown/red, Just to name a few. And the Missabe only started to use the Uof M style lettering because the lettering is 3M SCOTCHLITE. And the larger font was easier to cut vs. the smaller sized lettering.

Ok guys, let's drop this DMIR/TCW paint color debate. Railtalk locked the previous thread for a reason.

We know Mike B. loves the TCW and rightfully so. We know DM&IR Fan loves the DM&IR and rightfully so. We know the DM&IR has been a mainstay "up north" and noone was happy to see them get gobbled up by a major class 1. We know the TCW blocks the view at Hoffman during the St. Paul turn. Some people find them both interesting, some don't.

I think we all agree they are both a shade of maroon/brown/rust as a primary color with some rich yellow/gold/mustard color as a secondary color with taking swatches to Home Depot (or Menards or Lowe's) to have them match the exact specs. I'd say the DM&IR stole their colors from the UMD Bulldogs and the TCW patterns it after the Gophers.

What sucks worse is that this thread has to be in the Canadian National forum.
