It wasn't long after I pulled into the yard that I caught another trio of EMDs. http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnfladung/2615134826/ Note the third unit in the consist is the SD40-2R http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnfladung/2614305499/ I thought it was somewhat odd that they cut off the train from the power and then raced west. I would quickly learn why they did this. As I left the yard to pursue a spot that's been on my list for almost a year I heard that the three units I just saw race west without their train to "help" a train that wasn't moving. I'm not sure exactly what happened but the train they went to go push was apparently stalled somewhere around Mississippi as the helper units were connected practically under the Kellogg overpass. It wasn't long and this train was moving and out of sight. The helpers would later come back to pick up there stacks and head west with them from Pig's Eye. As luck would have it I couldn't catch but one westbound during my time up on the Kellogg overpass but I did catch a series of eastbound trains for some going away shots. First one a couple NS units sandwich in a former Conrail unit. http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnfladung/2614305791/ Next would be a CN train. http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnfladung/2614306169/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnfladung/2614306579/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnfladung/2615136688/ Shortly after the CN train cleared a BNSF covered hopper train came through. http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnfladung/2615137006/ Finally, what I consider to be the "shot of the night" for me can be seen here (my only westbound captured from the Kellogg overpass: http://johnfladung.net/images/CPR/062608CP6047.html http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnfladung/2615137288/ I would say that the Kellogg overpass is going to be one of my favorite spots to shoot. I will be back there semi-frequently this summer during great weather. I'd like to thank Nicholas Benson and Robert Ball for inspiring me to check out this spot sooner than later! Shortly after that CP light power shot was taken I would then go back to Pig's Eye yard until dark to see several train roar past me. Another great night railfanning in Saint Paul. Thanks for reading/looking. |

Place all of the blame on Robert... I was copying his shots. Nice catch w/ the -2R. |

A day well spent! I find summer evenings a great time to spend in the "yard" also. Thanks for sharing. |
