I spent a couple of mornings track-side in Northfield over the holiday break, and I must say, that is a fantastic place to watch trains. 80% of the yard has an unobstructed and close view from a nice paved path along the edge of a park, the light stays useable into the early afternoon, and Progressive Rail moves some interesting stuff. I saw four trains in a couple of hours on Wednesday (Progressive switching, a UP coal train, a UP manifest, and the PGR Northfield job), and I saw two on Friday (UP manifest and PGR Northfield job). I've posted a , and a . Highlights include: - A UP manifest where the first four locos/cars were a pair of , a , and a - - - - - Also, I noticed that the two UP ACe's I saw had - one had a red band on the the bottom, the other had yellow - and some people say all UP locomotives look the same The first day a conductor tossed me a pair of UP work gloves, which was a nice gesture. Between that and giving up on the licensing of their logo for models, I'm finding it difficult to find a reason to dislike them The second day I went out and nothing was happening when I arrived. Knowing Progressive is pretty accommodating to railfans, I gave them a call and the guy there told me that a train should be arriving shortly, and then offered me the engineer's cellphone number. Progressive Rail, if I ever need any heavy equipment or several tons of cement moved, I will be giving you a call. |

If anyone wants to spend a morning down there between Christmas and New Years, I'd be happy to join you. |
