I saw a pic once of the bottom of Short line hill where the now UP Western Ave yard is and in the pic the hill was double tracked where did the double track end or was it double all the way to Minneapolis? |

My understanding is yes, but was removed when they put in the steam line. |

It was double track all the way to Aberdeen, SD but most of it was gone by the 1930s. The section between Chestnut St. and Fordson Jct. was the last piece to be taken out sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. |

The short line hill was single tracked the summer of 1982 i think, memory is old. that summer i was part of a small crew that removed the crossover at chestnut street, took the 2nd main out on the hill all the way to the ford switch. i had beentold that there was a steam heat line going to be buried in the old track bed. might have been 1983, not sure anymore. |

I have a sequence of pictures taken around January 1983 (plus or minus a month) showing a MILW train climbing double track from Chestnut St. Perhaps the 2nd track was removed summer of 1983? Below is keyword search results for "1256-3" http://johnhill_3009.rrpicturearchives. ... rch=Search Some other 1983 Short Line photos on my RRPA site show single track already west of Fordson & other 1978 photos with double still in place. Regrettably my coverage of the area was very sporadic. Some large date gaps in between. John |

You wereright about the time . it was the summer of 1983 that our crew took the second main out. that was my last year of employment on the Milwaukee. there used to be a great deli just a half a block away from the tracks. north side. larry olsen |
