I was reading a blog from Milwaukeeroad Matt about documenting railroad history with our photography, it made me think of some things I found out about and saw on this past weekends camping trip. My wife and I spent the weekend at Jay Cooke State part, located a few miles east of Carlton Minnesota. I kind assume that most of you probbaly know this but for those of you that don't, here's a little history.
Jay Cooke was a self made millonaire and in 1870 he started the Northern Pacific Railway, construction began right in Carlton MN, there is a large sign as you enter the town declaring this (Sorry no PIC of that but one I hope to get on a planned trip) I did find this on one of our many hikes. It was erected in for the NP. It crosses a narrow gorge of the St. Louis River. Here's view looking across the bridge facing south. This line is now the "Munger" trail but once was the main NP line from the St. Paul to Duluth, the infamous "Skally". As I was standing on the bridge I was thinking this is the that the NP engineers had seen as they drove their trains across. Quite a view I must say, my photography does not do it justice. At any rate I was inspired by MM's blog to try and document a small piece of Minnesota Railroad history. Thanks for indulging.
