BNSF 2758 is not an actual GP39. It was built as Southern 2581, which was a GP30. It was rebuilt by EMD into a GP39E in 1991. Now the reason why some GP39E's have the regular GP30 look while others don't is because of their rebuild dates. For example, the group of engines from 2740-2748 were rebuilt in 1989. These engines still retain the GP30 look. But engines in the 2749-2768 range sport the "cut down" look, such as BNSF 2758. These engines were rebuilt in 1991, 2 years after the first group. Here's two examples: BNSF 2748 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... ?id=434400 BNSF 2749 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... ?id=868156 Hope this clears things up. |
