RRpicturarchives askes for an "AAR Type" for rolling stock. it also list a small bit of info as to what the type is. after a search on the AAR website I have not been able to find a list of what cars are what type.

http://www.bnsf.com/cws/eqpumlerpublic/roofcode.html is a numeric code for "roof" type
http://espee.railfan.net/aar_1989.html is a model railroader site with a list and explanation from 1989

everything I have found list them by cubic feet of interior space so those help too.

I've done more research since your question and cannot find any more recent info. Even AAR.org doesn't have anything available. A lot of modeller sites have info, but, again, the info is prior to '89.
