Does anybody have details on these cranes? It looks like they're used on several of the locks/dams along the Mississippi. They say "FMC" on the side. This one's in Alma, WI on Lock & Dam #4. |

I know they use them to lift and lower the gates to the spillway. |

Here's what my father (who works for Corps of Engineers) found out: "The lock and dam cranes were all purchased new. They are not railroad cranes. They are lattice-boom cranes that are on a railroad car platform (on but not part of the car). The car itself has a hydraulic lift that can raise and lower the bulkheads on the locks and dams. The cranes are intended primarily to remove debris and perform other maintenance. In the future, the Corps will probably dispose of these cranes and do the debris removal and other maintenance work from barge-mounted cranes. Not all the locks and dams have cranes. Lock and dam 3 (Red Wing, Minnesota) down to lock and dam 10 (Guttenberg, Iowa) are similar structures, and I think all have similar cranes. The two Saint Anthony Falls locks and locks and dams 1 and 2 are reconstructions of or additions to older structures. The dams below Guttenburg are in other Corps of Engineers districts. Lower Saint Anthony Falls may have a different type of crane, but I am not sure if any of the other navigation dams above Red Wing have them. |
