I saw this in Northfield the other day. I've never seen a hopper like this before - what's the story on these? Are they available in N scale?

No, no, no... I know you can get 4 bay hoppers... I'm talking about this particular style. Look at how the metal shrouding is under the ladders at either end of the car - it looks like a modified version of what I'd consider a normal ACF hopper like the on you've posted.

I bet you're looking at a kitbash here.

Well, the reporting marks are Trinity Leasing, so I assume that Trinity built the car. However, looking at their website, they don't have any hoppers in their catalog that look like this. Maybe it's new?

Looking at what you pointed out I cant recall seeing any like that on the market or for that matter on the rails, GATX has smaller Cement type hoppers that have a car body close to that but they are two bay hoppers. You could kitbash using the ends of the smaller two bay and the larger four bay.

I'm going to say it hauls Dryers Distilled Grain (or DDG for short). Thats the left over product in the production of ethanol.

Some of the guys at the had a good explanation for the car. It's actually an older Trinity car, probably built for Chevron in 1991.

I was going to say - that looks like an early 90's model. Depending on your photo resolution you might be able to pick off a built date on the car. Every so often ones with extra shrouding show up in the area but these ones take the prize for the most extra metal...
