I think the real test is when Northstar begins operations. If that line is successful, then we will probably see these other proposals move forward faster. But..it's all a matter of how generous the Fed's are since none of these lines can be built without their support. With all the money they have just pumped into our state for transportation, I think we're screwed for awhile. |
My take is that any future lines that are built need to serve the areas where it is needed most. The majority of the people commuting into and out of the metro are living in the western, eastern and southern burbs. A line that would run west to say Long Lake, a line that runs east to Hudson or and south to Lakeville or even Northfield would be the best options for the "next" round of commuter lines, after that we should start looking farther out towards Duluth, Rochester and Mankato. You asked for thoughts these are just a few of mine :D
Matt, I'm with you on this one. Why not look at this comuter rail around the cities more? Lets use it to "funnel" people into the twin cities from Lakeville, Hastings, Buffalo, Minnetonka, Hudson , and so fourth.. I am so sick and tired of hearing about this stupid Rush Line corridor, I could give a dam about taking a train to and from Duluth or Superior. There is no traffic congestion to really speak of on that particular route. Lets use these areas that truly do need it first, I really could care less if I even saw a line to Duluth in my lifetime, its not practical,, not right now. As soon as the traffic in the twin cities is somewhat more alleviated, then we'll look at a giant "train set" to Duluth and possibly beyond. |
