I own a Rebel XTI, and have been contemplating buying a telephoto lens. Is it worth spending extra money on "good" glass? I've expanded my photography skills, and am shooting more landscape when railroads aren't close by.

I've looked into a 70-200 f/4L IS. They are about $1000, but would be a great lens for a long time.

Any input appreciated.

Spend as much as you feel comfortable spending. Money spent on glass is money well spent, at least for a photographer.

I agree with what Mike says........Don't go cheap you'll regret it. Personal experience speaking here.

Get the best glass you can afford, and you won't regret it. Is it worth it? Canon wouldn't make the stuff if photographers didn't think it was worth it.

Every railfan who uses Canon needs to have some flavor of the 70-200 L - it's perfect for train photography. I have the f/4 non IS, which pops up used on KEH once in a while for $450 or so. I'd love to have the IS version sometime - until then I'll use a monopod or tripod.

If you don't already have decent short glass, you could look at going non-IS with a used 70-200 L and pickup the 17-40 L, which I've heard all kinds of good things about.

Thanks for the inputs guys...I really appreciate it.

Nick, good feedback on the 70-200L. That is really what I'm leaning towards. I started with a "kit" lens a year ago, in the 18-55mm that came with the package for the Rebel Xti. Obviously I want to buy glass I can transfer to a FF camera someday.

I've also heard good things about the 17-40L, but don't get into a lot of wide angle situations for train shooting. It would satisfy the landscape side of things for me though.

What is "KEH" by the way?

KEH.com is a reputable source for buying and selling used camera equipment. I have sold and bought used equipment through them and never had a problem.
