I was just doing a little reading and discovered this monster for my first time. Has anyone ever seen/photographed it in the twin cities (and surrounding) area? Any interesting stories? |

I saw it come up the Spine in 2002 or so. After that I never had any interest in seeing 'show trains' such as the 261, 2816, 6936, etc. |

The 6936 is the only one that is in operating condition, but there are several that are still in existence. |

I had heard somewhere that becasue of the 4 axels they are limited as to where they can travel. Is there any truth to that? |

yes. the trucks where all one unit, instead of two, two axle trucks. the four axle truck is longer then a three axle like most locos so they are harder on corners and turnouts. two two axle trucks will would be esier on a corner then even a three axle truck. think of trying to send a straight object around a corner, the longer one will want to cut the inside of the corner more then the shorter one, putting more stress on the rails. |

Yea I can see the physics of it for sure. If I recall it was one of their major downfalls as most other railroads would not give permission on their trackage, so UP could only run them on their own. Does anyone know the facts behind this as I'm only trying to remember something I read quite a while back. |
