So last evening I was driving on the St. Anthony Blvd. bridge over Northtown and saw a CP freight creeping to a stop just west of Foley Wye, I then proceded to University and was talking to a guy there who said that he had heard over the scanner that that CP freight had stalled and there was another freight behind it that had to push it to University, I heard that stalled freight and that engine was NOT happy, a single VERY GRITTY GE. Anyone else heard this?

Yep, happens all the time its a pretty good uphill battle from the river, gets worse when you have to try and go around the corner and up hill.

I talked to the engineer who was running the train at the time. He had 8000 tons of train and thought they could make it up that hill since they made it up a good sized hill near Glenwood.

Years ago railfan talk was that the BNSF hated the CP's "one unit wonders". In the winter, rumor had it that the BNSF required the CP to add more power, so they could make it up the hill. I don't know where that rumor came from, but it sounded credible. On the scanner you could hear BNSF dispatchers asking westbound CP trains if they could start moving again if they had to stop on the "hill". If not, they had to sit in Pig's Eye until all the BNSF traffic cleared.

I still hear the East Hump ask CP and BN trains that. The East Hump may know the totals and engines a CP train has, but he doesn't know what the HPT since he doesn't know how many engines are actually online.

The only restriction that the bn put on the cp in regards to one engine is on the hinkley sub as far as i know...
