Growing up in Pine River, Minnesota (30 minutes north of Brainerd/Baxter) made “railfanning” difficult. You see, the rail line, which was owned at that time by the Burlington Northern, was removed in the mid 1980s. I never had the opportunity to see a short train go over the rails in my hometown.
You could say that my father got me started early. He never hesitated to share his model trains (HO & O scales) with me was a great thrill. He also provided interesting, and often entertaining info about what real trains were like as he was growing up. My passion for trains only grew as the years went on.
I eventually went to college up in Bemidji, Minnesota at Bemidji State University. Living on the Grand Forks Sub was a thrill, although one can only see a few trains a day on that subdivision. I met numerous great people, made several friends through the Bemidji model railroad club, and made a close friend whom I remain in touch with frequently. I have now earned my degree, and graduated in May 2007.
Today I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota. You’ll often find me near Dayton’s Bluff, particularly near the CP Shops at Pig’s Eye Yard. I have a lot to learn though and I’m continuing to ask questions and get to know veteran railfans who frequently like to share their knowledge with the younger folks, such as myself.
I’m not the world’s best photographer, nor do I pretend to be. I do enjoy taking pictures of trains, and then sharing my pictures with other railfans on my own personal website which I invite you to check out.
